Sustaining a Student-Centered Taught Curriculum
All of this leads to our assertion that the taught curriculum should be heavily student-centered, encouraging use of a variety of learning strategies and processes with the instructor being a genuine coach, guide, and mediator rather than dispenser of information. Ultimately, how students learn most effectively must guide and inform how they learnâand how they are taught.
We know a great deal now about the power of cooperative learning to engage and stimulate student learning, enhancing student abilities to creatively and critically deal with real-world scenarios, simulations, creative problem solving, and decision making. The taught curriculum needs to take advantage of such strategies. Similarly, it should ensure time for such processes by expediting students' acquisition of key declarative information (e.g., facts, concepts, generalizations, rules, theories, algorithms). The increasingly popular concept of the âflippedâ curriculum reflects this commitment to an emphasis on personalization. Whenever possible, students should acquire information in what was traditionally presented in a lecture or textbook format via out-of-class access points such as electronic lectures and interactive technology-based information sessions.
The traditional notions of on-grade behavior will also come into question. Should we have grade-level designationsâor are they artifacts of traditional industrialized and standardized notions of schooling? In a truly personalized environment, students will be able to progress at their own pace, supported by the coaching and monitoring of their teacher(s). Acceleration will be available to all when warranted. Similarly, students requiring extra support and intervention to master key concepts and skills will have the time and resources available to them for independent tutorials, coaching sessions, and related services.
